Michelle South, a dedicated special education teacher at Auburn Elementary, kicks off the new year as the first Crystal Apple recipient of 2025! With over 20 years of service, Michelle has made a significant impact on the lives of her students and the school community.
Mrs. South has been a cornerstone of the Auburn Washburn special education program for more than two decades. Specializing in autism education, she has worked tirelessly to create an inclusive and supportive environment for her students. Michelle’s classroom is a place where students receive personalized attention and care, ensuring they have the tools and support they need to succeed.
When asked what a day in her classroom looks like, this is what Mrs. South had to say: “I have nine students in my classroom that are all amazing. They all have autism, and we work on teaching them how they learn… we work on meeting them where they are.” She explains how rewarding it is to see the strides her students take in her classroom.
Mrs. South was nominated by Becky Frosch, a paraeducator with Auburn Washburn. In her nomination letter, she says, “She works with each child on an individual basis to see each student’s abilities and not just their disabilities.” Not only does Mrs. South go above and beyond for her students, but Mrs. Frosch tells us that she is a strong community builder amongst her coworkers as well, “She works with up to 10 paras in her classroom also helping them out in ways that go beyond her role as a boss. She is an amazing teacher and person and it would be wonderful if she had this recognition.”
Join us in congratulating Michelle South on receiving this award! She has received a custom engraved Crystal Apple Award and a getaway thanks to our friends at Prairie Band Casino and Resort – dinner, free plays, an overnight stay, and more.
